Photonics Day 2012, titled ‘Days Dedicated to Creating Innovative New Products Utilizing the University’ was held on Wednesday November 3, at the University’s Photonics Center. Speakers for the first part were Professor Thomas M. Baer, Executive Director of the Stanford Photonics Research Center (SPRC) at Stanford University and former President of the Optical Society of America (OSA) who has vast experience in starting up new businesses in Silicon Valley, and Mr. Masahiro Samejima (Uchida & Samejima Law Firm), the attorney on whom the competent lawyer appearing in Jun Ikeido’s award-winning novel Shitamachi Rocket was based. In the second part titled ‘An Invitation to the Photonics Cannery,’ the Center’s Executive Director Professor Satoshi Kawata explained the concept and gave an outline of the Photonics Cannery, followed by speeches from representatives of the Center’s partner companies. In the third part, the Photonics Cannery equipment that enables entities ranging from large companies to individuals to create new optics and photonics products, equipment, devices and services was introduced, and the participants must have gained an understanding of the Cannery’s attraction. Due to space constraints, the number of participants this year was limited to 70 people although the actual number of applications was much higher. We thank all those who participated as well as those who sent in applications. Click here for photos.
