My name is Kazuto Yamauchi and I am a new member at the Photonics Center. “Light” for me is X-rays and, therefore, I would like to describe some of the developments in X-ray optics while telling you a little about myself.

X-rays were discovered in 1895 by Wilhelm Röntgen. In 1912, less than twenty years later, Max von Laue discovered the diffraction of X-rays by zinc sulfide crystals, and the following year William H. and William L. Bragg, father and son, presented Bragg’s law. These brilliant achievements gave us light that enabled humans to see atoms, the greatest beneficiary of which is the field of crystal structure analysis. A hundred years later, the U.N. General Assembly proclaimed 2014 to be the International Year of Crystallography, showing just how much X-rays have contributed to crystallography. In the meantime, optics and crystallography have grown immensely, through mutual stimulation, and have dramatically improved the performance of light sources. Higher throughput has been the greatest need for crystal structure analysis, and particularly for the structural analysis of proteins. X-rays in the form of synchrotron radiation sources have shown rapid advancements in brilliance since around 1990. As a result, X-rays acquired the byproduct spatial coherence, which had not been particularly needed for crystal structure analysis, and a new discipline called coherent X-ray optics was born at synchrotron radiation facilities such as SPring-8. While it is somewhat misleading to say, their function as a tool for viewing matter may have brought X-rays back to the forefront of science.

  • Professor Wolfgang Fritzsche visited Photonics Center on 16 September 2016. Prof. Wolfgang Fritzsche, Department Head of Nanobiophotonics at Leibniz Institute of Photonic Technology e.V., payed a visit to Photonics Center on the 16th of September, 2016. The professor, who has been engaged in innovative developments for bio life science utilizing high sensitivity/spatial resolution and diverse capability for information collection of plasmonics and Raman spectroscopy, visited Photonics Center and Tamiya Laboratory and exchanged views on prospective research interactions with Prof. Yasushi Inouye, Executive Director of PARC, and Prof. Hiroshi Iwasaki, Program Coordinator of PARC. Currently, Prof. Professor Wolfgang Fritzsche is a short-term visiting researcher of JSPS (Japan Society for the Promotion of Science) working at Hashimoto Laboratory, Graduate School of Science and Technology, Tokushima University.

  • Dr. Dieter W. Pohl visited Photonics Center. Dr. Dieter W. Pohl contrived the SNOM (Scanning Near-Field Optical Microscopy) using localized evanescent waves at IBM Zurich Laboratories, Switzerland in 1982, and then, for the first time in the world, verified super resolution imaging via visible light: Sharpened the tip of dielectric substance (quartz) and covered it with metal, and made an opening much smaller than wave length of light, to use the nonradiation light field (near-field) generated at the opening as a light spot. Photo:Dr. Dieter W.   • We held 49th colloquium on 1st August. We had honor to welcome Dr. Yasuo Hasegawa, Director-General, National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology, and Mr. Satoshi Fujita , Ph. D, Group Leader of Biomedical Research Institute, AIST.Dr. Hasegawa gave a lecture about what AIST actually research and accomplish. He talked about not only research activity but also activities of academic-industrial alliance.Mr. Fujita gave a speech about cell function and cellular imaging as his research activities, and the topic of cell chip and cell manipulation attracted the audience's interest.Some of participants said "he could understand AIST research activities",  "he was very interested in topic of organ on chip" in questionnaires. We would like to appreciate for the participants.

  • We held TLT (Tuesday Lunch Time) on July 12th. Tuesday, 2016. We held TMT (Tuesday Morning Tea) regularly on Tuesday morning, in order to provide opportunities for professors, company researchers and students to interact and share the research information. As a special version of TMT, we held a lunch time gathering “TLT (Tuesday Lunch Time”) on July 12th with complimentary sandwiches, doughnut and coffee.  Nearly total of 40 participants enjoyed conversation and sharing the information in a relaxed atmosphere.

  • We held the 48th colloquium on 6th June. We had honor to welcome Mr. Kiichi Kometani from Ueno Fine Chemical Industry, Ltd, which is a member of Photonics Center, and Professor Kazuto Yamauchi as a new member Laboratory of Photonics Center.Mr. Kometani gave a lecture about Super Engineering Plastic "Ueno LCP" with passing the samples of the product. Participants could understand what Ueno Fine Chemical Industry, Ltd. produce by ear and eye. Professor Yamauchi spoke about their laboratory's research activity which was titled "Formation of Micro Beam by Synchrotron Radiation X-ray".   • 9月16日(金)Wolfgang Fritzsche教授がフォトニクスセンターを来訪されました Wolfgang Fritzsche教授・Nanobiophotonics部門長/Leibniz Institute of Photonic Technology eVがフォトニクスセンターを来訪されました。同教授はプラズモニクスやラマン分光法の高感度、高空間分解能、多様な情報収集能を用いたバイオ・ライフサイエンスの新たな展開を図られています。フォトニクスセンターと民谷研究室を見学され、井上センター長、岩崎プログラムマネージャと意見交換および将来の研究交流について議論しました。なお同教授は、徳島大学 理工学研究部 橋本修一研究室に、日本学術振興会招へい研究者(短期)として来訪されています。

  • 8月1日、第49回フォトニクス・コロキアムが開催されました 今回のコロキアムでは、産業技術総合研究所長谷川裕夫関西センター所長、藤田聡史研究グループ長をお招きし、ご講演を頂きました。長谷川所長からは、産総研では具体的にどのような研究が行われているのか、そして研究活動以外の産学連携活動についてのご紹介を頂きました。藤田研究グループ長からは、実際の研究内容として細胞チップ・細胞操作のご紹介を頂きました。開催後のアンケートでは、産総研の講演を聞ける貴重さを評価する声や、研究以外に何をしているのかを理解する場と出来たという感想、Organ on chipの話が大変興味深かった、とのお声を頂きました。ご参加を頂いた皆様、誠にありがとうございました。

  • スペシャル企画ランチタイムTMT 開催しました 教員、企業研究者、学生の皆様の研究成果の情報交換と交流の場として、毎週火曜日の朝に、TMT(Tuesday Morning Tea)を開催させていただいておりますが、7月12日(火)は、特別企画として、ランチタイムにTLT(Tuesday Lunch Time)開催いたしました。   ランチタイムということもあり、教員、企業研究者、学生、総勢40名程の方に参加いただきました。いつもとは少し趣向を変えたサンドイッチやドーナツなどの軽食を楽しまれながら、アットホームな雰囲気の中、研究成果についての情報交換の活発な交流が行われました
